Do I need sedation dentistry?

Does the thought of visiting a dental office fill you with fear? Do you ever feel nervous, or even anxious, leading up to or during a dental treatment? Ask Dr. Charles Anonye about sedation dentistry in York, Pennsylvania. Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help patients with dental phobias relax during treatment.

What is nitrous oxide?

With nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas, our dentist will place a small mask over the nose. Through this, you will breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This gas will relax you, but you will remain awake. Our dentist can control the amount of sedation you receive. After your treatment, the gas will wear off quickly and you will be able to drive yourself home.

What is oral sedation?

If you choose oral sedation, our dentist will have you take a pill about one hour before treatment. The pill will make you drowsy, but you will remain awake. You may slur when you speak and not remember much of the treatment. Occasionally, a patient will become groggy enough to fall asleep, but they can easily be awakened with a gentle shake. The level of sedation can be controlled based on the dosage given.
